Exactly one year ago today , I received my
first professional opportunity from MAS Holdings. Prior to this opportunity, Yes !! I did several part-time but, in professional view, it was my very first job.
university students, we had to overcome a mandatory obstacle: our internship. This semi-academic structural evaluation has been designed to build students' industrial-based knowledge. In addition, this training session enhanced the student’s real-world working ability. Because quite frankly, all the theories and concepts were just stored in books, not in practical scenarios .
since that is so , we couldn’t neglect those academic parts. What if , we do need fundamentals for expanded evolution in any stream. However, as an undergraduate ,I faced two interviews and at the end of my second interview , they offered me an admin internship with a little allowance. Prabath once phoned me and explained the job description
I was so happy ,I still remember I wrote this line in my diary with a happy face.
MAS offered me a chance ,I’m so excited."
it is , yes!! I was so excited and hesitated. At the end of all the HR documentation , they sent me to a designing center called "Ayathi" , At that time, Mr. Manjula Gunawardana was my reporting manager(until his migration) and Mr. Eranga Fonseka was General Manager for entire Intimates clusters.
job wasn't as pleasant as I thought , Most of the admin functions , payroll systems, and even company culture were completely foreign to me. In the very first two weeks ,mostly I did lots of things that were not even close to my academic field (Data Science). Within a two weeks , I was desperate and hopeless , I phoned one of my best friends. He told me, "Let’s be patient ."Don’t make any decision at the moment."."
".
Things were getting worse day after day . I sat in front of the office computer and mapped some drivers' routes and checked their payments via the transport payment system .Some days they advised me to stay until 10 PM. At that time, I was in Bambalapitiya, and mostly it was midnight when I went to the accommodation on the transport from Biyagama. I started to talk to myself .
"You don’t need a undergraduate to do these simple tasks, A person with a general education is quite enough for this . I need to get out of this. "
The next morning , I went straight to my manager and I explained my concerns. He listened to all my sorrows .Finally, he raised his voice.
" Son, I did understand your passion and vision , but as your industrial mentor, my advice was don’t quite ,It’s not the answer . Firstly, try to get used to these admin functions, then do the experiments using your statistical knowledge. "
He gave me access to all the admin functions, including costing details, invoices, and budgets.
Then I changed my career path , I did both jobs with a positive mindset. The first one was kind of a business analyst role. I was doing analytical things, dashboard creation and data visualization . The second one was a conventional admin role. But this time I didn’t flop . I was happy and energetic. Because I learnt the value of the learning process . Normally, if you're in an internship, you have to do lots of things . Yes, it might be beyond your scope, but who cares? You are at the very beginning of your career, so you have lots of time . As a result, immerse yourself in any challenges.
Honestly, in my MAS internship, I had to do so many "Kade" jobs , but now when I’m turned back to that time, I didn’t count those tasks as "kade" jobs. I said those were like new experiences.
Hey!! I’m not a man who give proper guidelines for anyone. But If your undergraduate who hasn’t any working experiences . First rid of your pride. Open your mind to learn and accept . Then keep moving with positive vibe. Wait one more thing .
"Keep good friends with your circle. Your circle of friends doesn’t have to be huge. But it should be steady and truthful. Fortunately I had a such a circle. "
Don’t panic and change your plans at any moment. Always remember that flowers take time to bloom.
